Snow at the Beach

Won't be lounging in the sun!
Do you associate 6 inches of snow with living at the beach? My welcome to Delaware has been a cold and white one. Fortunately, I’d moved into the condo (my home away from home for the next 3 months) before the winter storm began. And I’d made a trip to the supermarket, so I was ready for whatever the end of our crazy East Coast winter brought.

When most people think of the beach, they think of playing in brisk ocean waves on a hot sunny day. They also dream of stretching out and lounging on the beach with smells of coconut suntan oil surrounding them while soaking up the sun; then eating pizza or burgers and fries and drinking beer.

Hello Delaware!
As my first night progressed, winter snow and strong winds welcomed me to Delaware with a fury and this morning I was gifted with a whole “snow day” of solitude. I wasn’t planning on going out because the snow continued throughout today, but the owner of the condo came by to shovel off the steps up to my condo (who in this day and age is that nice?!?) – and he suggested that I go for a walk on the beach in the snow. My initial thought was OMG NO; it’s too cold! But then I thought – I’ve never done that before so why not?

A freezing beach walk
Now that I’m back from a totally wind-blown, freezing and probably the shortest walk on the beach in all of history, I realize that my initial thought was correct. If the snow hadn’t been so deep that I couldn’t run, I’d have sprinted back to the warm, welcoming condo. OK, I’ve now been there and done that, and I don’t need to repeat that experience!

It’s still snowing and I have to admit that it’s really beautiful and because there’s no one else who’s crazy enough to live at the beach in the winter, the pristine and undisturbed beauty of the snow covering everything is extremely breathtaking and peaceful. It’s like living in your own little bubble, at least for one “snow day”.

Perfect, peaceful and quiet
